Why is the safe storage of firearms storage so important to young kids?

Young kids are curious. Even if you’ve talked to them many times about gun safety, they can’t really understand how dangerous guns can be. If they come across a loaded gun, they could accidentally injure or kill themselves or someone else.

Teens can be very emotional and may act without thinking. If they are depressed or moody, they may see a gun as an easy way out. In fact, most teens and preschoolers who commit suicide use guns from their own homes or the homes of relatives or friends. Teenagers should not be able to get a gun and bullets without an adult present.

People of any age who suffer from depression are at increased risk of suicide. If someone in the family suffers from depression or has suicidal thoughts, all guns should be removed from the home. If guns cannot be removed, be sure to unload and lock them up, with bullets stored separately and keys hidden. The best practice is to keep them in a gun safe,  the gun safe is now equipped with combination locks or fingerprint locks, with shelves for storing guns and an inner box for storing bullets separately inside the gun cabinet for maximum security.
